Susannah's House, A Place of Help and Hope for Mothers and Babies Affected By NAS
Susannah's House was started in 2013 in response to the explosive opioid crisis and its effects on pregnant women and babies especially. Whether prescribed by a doctor or used illegally, opioid drugs can create a dependence in the user. When an infant exposed to opioids in utero is born, they soon begin a painful withdrawl from those medications. Infants in withdrawl have high-pitched cries and tremors, and are placed in the NICU for weeks as they are given decreasing amounts of morphine or other opioids to wean them off the drugs. The long-term effects of NAS on children are still being studied.
At Susannah's House, we offer a state-licensed, intensive outpatient recovery program supporting pregnant and parenting women, as well as their children. Our members receive individual and group therapy by licensed therapists, attend classes on parenting, financial skills, physical wellness, nutrition, and more, and are able to bring their children to our childcare program while they focus on their own recovery.
